My 3 Origin Stories—and Why I Need All of Them
Bookish Edits has a few different origin stories.
Origin story 1:
Two years ago, I opened an Instagram message from an internet acquaintance asking, “You’re an editor, right? I have a memoir I need help with.” This partnership unlocked a passion in me, and I knew that all I wanted was to work with creative nonfiction writers. This partnership kicked off Bookish Edits in the most real way. If it weren’t for that author and that memoir, Bookish Edits probably wouldn’t be here.
Origin story 2:
In 2020 I was going through some things (and weren’t we all?). The problem was that I was trying to downplay my big thing, trying to shove it aside and pretend that it didn’t really matter, that it hadn’t really affected me. [Narrator: The big thing was, in fact, affecting her.] Someone close to me called me in the middle of the day and said this: “Charlotte, I can’t get you out of my head. What happened to you matters. Your experience matters.” When I had someone tell me that my experience, my story mattered, it changed everything. And the more I worked with writers and interacted with people on the internet, the more I realized that they might need someone to tell them that their story matters too.
Origin story 3:
May 2022 (five months ago at the time this post publishes): I’m hitting a wall in my business and don’t know if I should keep going, or if I should fold in the towel and call it a good try. I see an email in my inbox from a business coach I hadn’t really paid much attention to in the past, but this time, her words hit a chord. She listed out all the problems and mindset blocks I was feeling and talked about her mastermind. In one sitting, I filled out the intake form and scheduled a discovery call to learn more about this mastermind that promised to help me solve my business problems. I’ve been in that mastermind since June, and it’s changed everything about how I approach and engage with my business.
What happened was that I knew how to be an editor, but I didn’t know how to run a business. So I found help. Expert help, insight, and mentorship changed my vision and my own belief in myself. I needed all three of these origin stories to be where I am right now.
Your writing journey may have a few origin stories of its own. Maybe you started writing personal essays in high school and couldn’t stop. Maybe you published a blog for a few years and realized that those small, ordinary moments hold so much meaning that you want to preserve. Maybe you’ve felt something stir in your heart that won’t go away and, even though you’ve never considered yourself a writer, you want to try.
Maybe what you need is an expert. Maybe you know you have a story, but you just don’t know how to write it. That’s where The Story Architect Mastermind comes in. The Story Architect Mastermind exists to help you tell your story, to give you professional support, and to kickstart momentum that will keep you writing and sharing.
If the mastermind sounds like your missing piece, you can learn more here.
